Looks are deceiving

Reader warning, this might be TMI

This weekend, I gave in to my chocolate craving and bought a slice of "death by chocolate" cake.

Four layers of moist chocolate cake are separated by luscious chocolate frosting, almost the consistency of ganache.

It is so decadent, I'll need a week to eat it all.

I am out running from meeting to meeting with no time for lunch, so I grabbed a plastic spoon on my way out of the store and treat myself to several bites.

About 90 minutes later, the gurgling in my stomach alerts me that I need the toilet.

I think nothing of it until my stomach was cramping and I was back on the toilet thirty minutes after eating the cake again.

I tip the barely eaten cake into the garbage can.

My body is clear. It doesn't matter how good it looks and smells; it is not right for me.

Last week, the Gallup Organization published the 2025 State of the Global Workplace Report, and it turns out a lot of managers are having the same reaction to their employer that I had to that chocolate cake, and it is a dire warning:

If manager engagement continues to decline, it won’t stop with managers, and it won’t stop with engagement. The productivity of the world’s workplace is at risk. Gallup’s data show that the world’s workplace is not headed in the right direction. However, the data also show a productivity boom opportunity if executive leaders seize the moment.
Gallup estimates that if the world’s workplace was fully engaged, US$9.6 trillion in productivity could be added to the global economy, the equivalent of 9% in global GDP.

Gallup also provides guidance for the most effective path forward:

Here’s the path to a global productivity boom:
1 ) Ensure all managers receive training to cut extreme manager disengagement in half. Less than half of the world’s managers (44%) say
they have received management training.
2) Teach managers effective coaching techniques to boost manager performance by 20 to 28%.
3) Increase manager wellbeing by 32% through ongoing manager development.

Reader, in recent weeks, I've been introducing you to my new STAR TREATMENT program that 100% fulfills these management needs highlighted by Gallup in this report.

My STAR TREATMENT program is built around 5 essentials every manager needs:

Amplify Appreciation
Magnify Meaning
Boost Belonging
Accentuate Autonomy
Promote Psychological Safety

These aren’t buzzwords.

They’re what drives loyalty, performance, and retention.

When people feel seen and supported, they show up differently for their team and for the company.

This isn’t about adding more rules.

It’s about making more room for people to do their best work

The call to action is now. The response is STAR TREATMENT.

Reader, I've been stricken with vacay brain. My eyes pop open. Dawn is breaking. I grab my phone to see 6:00 a.m. on the dot. I pause to take stock following my 36-hour round trip to St. Louis by car. Do I need more sleep? Am I ready to start my day? I feel good, and walking with my dogs at the park sounds invigorating. My feet hit the floor and I start my day thinking about all the productive work I am going to accomplish. I walk the dogs, grab a light bite, make my morning posts on social...

Reader, this gets a little personal. Over the winter, I started playing pickleball. I love it! I'm having so much fun. Summer is now officially here with a daily heat index topping 100 this past week. In past years, I have avoided being outside in such dreadful heat. This year, I'm taking two or more showers a day to cool off and wash away the sweat. Yes, I'm a prolific sweater. One of those people who always looks like they just ran a marathon after any exertion in the sun. I could choose to...

Reader, last week I got to do what I love twice! I delivered talks at two conferences — one in Texas and one in Louisville. I know that interactive learning is the best, so my presentations include some type of "pair and share" element whenever possible. In Texas, I invited the participants to reflect on their happiest and least happy job experiences, then share the stories with their partners. Here was the punchline from the debrief: Was the experience you shared about compensation, tasks,...
