Don't be fooled

Reader, I have great news!

This week's #ShowUpPositive Spark, GERMINATE, is inspired by my newly planted tulip bulbs from the Keukenhof Gardens.

My husband and I recently took advantage of the cooler weather to plant the bulbs I purchased during my trip to the Netherlands this spring.

The instructions assured me that my bulbs already contained all the nutrition to germinate. All I needed to do was plant them at the appropriate depth in loose, well-drained soil.

We selected a spot in our backyard near our spring peony bush to extend the color display in this bed.

With the simple planting instructions, we quickly got the bulbs in the ground, and now I'm excited for the coming spring with hopes that all ten bulbs will flower, creating a brilliant display like this one.

Reader, reading the care pamphlet, got me thinking about the parallels between people and bulbs.

Businesses often expect people to show up in a role and bloom immediately and continuously, often without ongoing nurturing.

Worse still, they blame the person for the disappointing results instead of examining how they contribute to the problem.

Finally, they are fooled into thinking people are no longer valuable when they are actually in their important rejuvenation phase, leading to their next spectacular bloom.

Therefore, I offer you the same guidance I received for supporting the germination of my bulbs, which applies equally well to people at work.

  • Expect a natural delay between hiring (planting) and productivity (blooming).
  • Provide a healthy environment that encourages growth and performance (soil amendment).
  • Micromanagement stunts performance (overwatering causes bulb rot).
  • Achieving peak performance takes time and can be impeded by external forces.
  • Flowering is only one stage of growth and development. Future productivity is reliant upon nutritional recovery (photosynthesis and fertilization)
  • Just because you aren't seeing performance (blooming), doesn't mean there is no longer potential for future blooming.

What other lessons from flower bulbs do you see? Please drop me a note and let me know.

Reader, let's dispel a huge lie This week's #ShowUpPositive Spark is ENOUGH.. Early in my career, every publicly traded company I worked for eventually hired one of the big management consulting firms to help them figure out how to increase productivity and profit. At first, it was a helpful exercise. Tightening up processes, automating, and leveraging people in better ways were the right decisions. Unfortunately, the hamster wheel chasing more and more and more never eased. Workers became...

Reader, these tips are 🔥 This week's #ShowUpPositive Spark, BEHOLD, is inspired by my colleague Gary. Childhood was my introduction to the word behold. The contextual use was something of magnificence or splendor. Thus, I always interpreted behold to mean see something amazing had to be present. Then I met Gary during one of my early LinkedIn audio events, Talk Me Off the Ledge, and he opened my eyes to a whole new perspective. BE = Present, attentive; HOLD = Pause, be still. BEHOLD was not...

And here's the truth -- the holidays are just around the...
