Say 'yes' to rest

Reader, are you getting enough rest?

I'm not just talking about sleep. Rest is space from

  • people who zap your energy
  • constant demands
  • grinding at your computer all-day
  • the hampster wheel of productivity
  • back-to-back meetings
  • cleaning up someone else's mess
  • overwhelming commitments
  • being enslaved by obligation
  • masking your true self

I don't know about you Reader, but just reading that list makes me want to curl up in a ball and hide.

And here's the truth -- the holidays are just around the corner, which means this sh*t is only getting harder.

That's why now is the time to start practicing this vital #ShowUpPositive Spark, REST.

So, here are some practices to create spaces of rest in your day.

  1. Get up and move your body hourly and shift your focus from task to relationship activities - chat, smile, make fun plans.
  2. When switching activities, pause to do 1-2 minutes of belly breathing in which you only focus on counting in for 4 and out for 8. (Tip: breathe in and out through your nose to activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which helps you destress)
  3. Practice this mantra after difficult interactions: I don't feel good about what just happened, I accept that I can't do anything about it right now, and I'm choosing to let it go for now so I don't carry that energy into whatever happens next. [Tip: follow with #2 above]
  4. Power up your day by reflecting on things that make you joyful during your commute (instead of focusing on your anxiety about the day's activities).
  5. Power up at the end of your work day by sending 1 or more gratitude texts to co-workers.

Luckily your mind is very agile. You don't require time for a power nap to give it the rest that it needs to be more creative and rejuvenated.

Simply redirecting your thoughts to more energizing actions for brief periods of time provides rest.

But if you need to break the emergency glass at any time, simply search IG or TT for pet videos and watch a few. I promise they will reset your mood and distract your mind. [Tip: πŸ›‘ Resist all temptation to scroll your feed. Just the pet videos]

Reader, start now because it won't get any easier in the coming weeks, so with a little intentional practice now, you can build some habits to help you have less stressful holidays later.

Wishing you a rest-filled week,

temper tantrumReader can you relate? I really want to make VP before I turn 35. There aren't that many positions. Someone has to leave or die. So when a VP position opens in the distribution center in Ohio, and my boss says I should apply, I do. A few weeks later, I am flying to Grove City to interview. I am introduced to my male counterpart within the distribution organization, who is also a candidate for this VP role. Immediately, I know this guy already has the job on lockdown, and my...

Reader Do you meet new situations with trepidation or elation? As much as I want to be the latter, when I find myself out of my comfort zone, anxiety accompanies me. Thanks to my friend Laurie, I have just wrapped up my first three-week session of pickleball lessons. I'm feeling pretty green, but I understand the game's rules, and I know I need to practice to keep improving, so I decide to join my husband at neighborhood pickleball. I walk into the gymnasium at 10 a.m., the appointed time for...

Reader, thank you for welcoming me back to your inbox. I spent the last week of March on vacation with my husband at the beach. This is his last month of work before he retires. Our youngest daughter leaves for college this fall, and I'll be the primary household income again, which hasn't been true since I left my corporate job in 2006. I'm not going to lie; it freaks me out a little. I've even thought that maybe I should retire, too. Yet, the truth is I wanted to work during vacation two...
