Reader, it's going to be a long eight weeks. This run-up to the election may feel like your own journey through the seven circles of hell. So, this week, I thought it might be helpful to talk about the #ShowUpPositive Spark: TOLERANCE. Tolerance is not acceptance, agreement, or condonment. Consider this definition: a fair, respectful, and permissive attitude or policy toward people whose opinions, beliefs, practices, racial or ethnic origins, etc., differ from one’s own or those of the majority; freedom from bigotry and an insistence on conformity. Our country is more politically polarized than we've been since the Civil War. Rhetoric is extreme, and modern communications create echo chambers of biased perspective, fueling extreme positioning. However, our democracy and constitution protect individuals' rights to hold their opinions. The #ShowUpPositive approach embraces democratic liberties and respects individual freedoms regardless of their diametric opposition to one's own beliefs. With all the oppositional posturing reaching a new peak, it is easy to allow your judge to run amuck. This keeps you in a state of anxiety and worry and on guard to attack and defend, zapping your energy and effectiveness. Instead, here are some of the gifts you can recognize and appreciate:
